Abdurrahim Rahmi Zapsu, an intellectual of the early Republican period, is one of the leading figures of Islamic thought and the pioneer of religious publishing in Turkey. He is also the first generation representative of Kurdish enlightenment and one of the founders of modern Kurdish literature. Zapsu, who was the first person to create a Kurdish education curriculum in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, prepared works in many branches from grammar to mathematics, history and geography for Kurdish children, almost acting as an education board on his own.
This book is his. It was prepared to introduce today's readers to his life and works. While a unique, constructive and inclusive interpretation of Islam is included, an important phase of Kurdish modernization and literature is also illuminated. Thus, one of the missing links of the chain is completed.
Many works and poems of Zapsu that were unknown until today come to light for the first time with this book. On the other hand, quotations from an unpublished novel of Zapsu shed light on his strong literary side.
The book includes various anecdotes about some well-known names such as Said Nursi and Musa Anter, and what happened on the Eastern Front of the First World War. It is conveyed strikingly through Zapsu's testimony. These memories tell us about the weaknesses of the Ottoman administrators in the region, a geography devastated by the Russian occupation, evacuated villages, and volunteer troops who faced the danger of hunger and freezing in harsh winter conditions while defending the people.
