Anabasis Return of the Ten Thousand

Anabasis is the story of the epic march from Anatolia to the interior of Mesopotamia of the enormous army consisting mostly of Hellenic mercenaries, gathered by Cyrus, who coveted the Persian throne, to challenge his elder brother King Artaxerxes, and the Hellenes who were left stranded at the end of this unsuccessful expedition, from Kunaxa near Babylon. It is the ordeal story of their return to their homeland, hundreds of kilometers away. Xenophon, a student of the famous philosopher Socrates and also a noble and rich adventurer, joined this army by chance, and when the army was left without a commander, he led the Hellenes who were trying to advance on uncanny roads full of Persian traps and fighting to the death against warrior tribes that constantly blocked their way in geographies they did not know. He finally succeeded in returning them to their homeland. The screams of joy of the soldiers who saw the sea from the top of the mountains around Trabzon at the end of this difficult journey that lasted for months still echo in the minds of Western civilization: Thalatta! Thalatta!
