Diplomacy and Migration / The Other Side of the Turkish-Greek Exchange
This important study by Onur Yildirim adds another very important link to the chain of studies on the Turkish-Greek Exchange in recent years, and adopts a comparative perspective while discussing this problem, which has been on the agenda of both countries for years. While discussing this issue, which he sees as a neglected area in Turkish historiography, Yıldırım follows a different method, pointing out the 'narrow-mindedness' in which both Turkish and Greek historiography is stuck, and emphasizing the need to perceive the problem as a historical reality.
In Diplomacy and Migration, the author discusses the intense diplomatic negotiation process that took place in the background during the formation of the Exchange Protocol, and examines the formation of the exchange idea in the Lausanne negotiations from both sides, as well as touching upon the developments in both countries during the discussions. In the work, the immigrant problem that arose on both sides during the implementation of the agreement along with the population exchange (refugee issue in Greece, immigrant issue in Turkey) is examined from property and settlement to economic and cultural harmony. One of the results of this analysis is that the Population Exchange is one of the most important historical events that shaped the human tissue, property structure, social structure and power relations not only of Greece, as has been suggested so far, but also of Turkey.
