A hundred years have passed since the first step taken by Sayyid Jamal (Afghani), but no one has taken the second step. It has been six hundred years since Christianity was challenged (Protestantism). Four hundred years have passed since the Renaissance.
...Time passes. The new generation is changing rapidly. ...If we cannot free religion from the shape it has been accustomed to for centuries and turn it into a movement, religion will also die with the death of the old and senile generation that clings to it as a tradition. The existence of these evil-minded, doubtful and confused people will hasten the death (of religion). ... But we feel sorry for our own people and for the future of our people. Tomorrow, this hollow and empty generation you see now will establish our people.
It is a pitiful situation that this people, after centuries of efforts to embrace the 14-century-old Islamic culture, its human meanings and virtues, has become a poor nation, devoid of content, and has to break away from its past and start from scratch, like a newly incarnated African or Australian nation.
