Existence and Psychiatry
Between 1975 and 1990, Engin Geçtan wrote four books on his field of expertise, psychiatry, which were received with interest by lay readers. Existence and Psychiatry are the last of these four that have become classics today. At the same time, this book also shows that the author places humanity and human conditions at the center of his writing studies, which he started with purely academic interest.
Existence and Psychiatry can, in a sense, be considered an experiential-intellectual autobiography, as it includes the intellectual transformations that Geçtan has gone through throughout his career, which has now exceeded forty years.
In the first part of the book, the field of work and the personal approach to this field are introduced, while on the other hand, the human being is described as a "process"; But this is a person living in an ongoing culture. In the second part, consisting of articles titled "Meaninglessness", "I am Narcissistic", "Life and Death", a series of basic existential questions that the author shares with many people in his clinical studies are discussed.
