Şıpsevdi in Today's Turkish - Classics of Turkish Literature 55 Book Description “This work will not serve to humiliate the afrangian, on the contrary, it will serve to save him from misunderstanding. More precisely, this novel was written to make people laugh rather than to serve any purpose. (...) Is Meftun a madman suffering from the disease of Frankish admiration? No. We will see that it is not that either. Judging by the fact that he has moments of intelligence at certain limited times, it is very possible that he is one of the group whose mind goes in and out, like malaria with infrequent seizures.” The novel, which was serialized under the name “Alafranga” in 1901, was left unfinished due to the wrath of the censorship, and was reborn in 1909 under the name Şıpsevdi. Hüseyin Rahmi created one of the most famous Western wannabe characters, Meftun, and managed to make today's readers taste the high humor and philosophy of his style. Şıpsevdi is a timeless work. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar (1864-1944) Hüseyin Rahmi, who kept his period and his environment alive in his novels and was loved and read by the masses from his young ages, is one of the rare figures of our literature. In his books, subjects such as the special beliefs of Istanbul life, social and economic inequalities, and relations between men and women are treated, often humorously and sometimes sadly, while preserving the original speech styles of the people. "Local color" enters our novel for the first time. He began his writing career in the Tercüman-ı Hakikat newspaper in 1883. He became famous when his novels and stories were serialized in the İkdam newspaper in 1896. He becomes the most read writer of his time. All his earnings come from writing. In this way, he bought his mansion in Heybeliada, which is now a museum. After the Constitutional Monarchy in 1908, he published a humor newspaper called Boğaz with Ahmet Rasim. This is how he undergoes the first investigation. The newspaper closes. Second time Am I Crazy? He will be tried for his novel and will be acquitted again. He has over sixty books, mostly novels, stories, plays, articles and criticism. We will continue to include the author's selected works in our Turkish Literature Classics Series.
