Dublin, 1841. A cold morning in December. A little boy is deceived by sweet words, taken away from his mother and found brutally murdered. It is one of the dozens of grievous murders committed in the city where poverty, inequality and political instability dominate, but unlike the others, it drives the public into agitation. Because the killer, an irresponsible student named John Delahunt, is also a paid informant for the intelligence officers in Dublin Castle. The strange thing is that the murderer neither regrets the murder he committed nor is afraid of the punishment he will receive. While waiting in his cell for the day of execution, he chooses to calmly write his story.

Andrew Hughes, who found the documents of this event by chance while doing historical research, masterfully managed to convey the story, which took place in 1841, in a Dickensian atmosphere and in a language worthy of gothic literature.
