Küçük Şeyler

Little Things deals with ordinary events, pains, hopes, disappointments that may happen to ordinary people, in other words, some realities of life and the emotions experienced in the face of these realities. These are ordinary stories such as feeling sad about trees being cut down, being joyful with the sound of birds and suffering for the sake of love, and the destruction of our dreams that we hope for with a smile, but which manage to deeply affect the reader. Samipaşazade Sezai, who introduced the first examples of modern short stories to Turkish literature, emphasized in the foreword he wrote for Küçük Şeyler that the power of the story is hidden in the details and that simple subjects will also gain importance as long as they are written beautifully.

Samipaşazade Sezai (1859-1936) Born in Istanbul, Sezai spent his childhood and adolescence in the large mansion of his father Sami Pasha, who was also the Minister of Education, in Taşkasap. This mansion was an important meeting point that hosted famous intellectuals, writers and poets of the period. Sezai met many writers and poets here. He took Arabic, Persian and French lessons from private tutors. Sezai, who adopted the innovative ideas of Namık Kemal and his close friend Abdülhak Hamit, who greatly influenced him in his youth, was appointed second secretary to the London Embassy in 1880. Here he had the opportunity to examine Western literature, especially the works of Shakespeare. The time he spent in London broadened his world of thought and literary horizons. He continued to work as an assistant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Istanbul until 1901. Between 1886 and 1901, during the years he spent in Istanbul, he published Sergüzeşt, Küçük Şeyler and Rumûzü'l-Edeb. The first radical observations about the westernized world of Istanbul appear in his works. His treatment of the concepts of captivity and freedom in Sergüzeşt caused him to come under surveillance by the government and in 1901 he escaped to Paris, where he joined the Young Turks. We will continue to include selected works by Samipaşazade Sezai, one of the pioneers of innovative literature during the Tanzimat period, in our Turkish Literature Classics Series.
