In the mid-sixteenth century, on the banks of the Havel River lived a horse trader named Michael Kohlhaas, one of the most honest and at the same time one of the most fearsome men of his time. This exceptional man, the son of a village teacher, spent his life as an exemplary citizen until the age of thirty. He was still living peacefully with his work on his farm in the village that bears his name. He raised the children his wife gave him as hard-working and loyal individuals with the fear of God. There was not a single person among his neighbors who did not experience his helpfulness or honesty. In short, if he had not gone astray for one of his virtues, the world would have remembered him with blessings. However, his sense of justice turned him into a bandit and murderer.

Heinrichvon Kleist constantly confronts the concepts of right and injustice, good and evil, in the story of Michael Kohlaas, who begins with the unjust confiscation of his two horses by a nobleman and enters into a severe defiance process with feelings of revenge when he cannot obtain justice for himself through legal means. While he is an exemplary citizen in every respect, what turns Kohlhaas into a criminal and a terrible person is his passion for justice and his inability to tolerate injustice. This immortal work, which strikingly reveals the helplessness of individuals in the face of the corruption and arbitrariness of the ruling class, still maintains its currency...
