The work of Paulo Freire, a leading name in critical pedagogy, called Pedagogy of Freedom is one of his last works. In the words of educational theorist Stanley Aronowitz, who also provides an introductory text to the book, it is possible to read this important work dated 1996 as "Freire's last words".

On the other hand, although Pedagogy of Freedom is one of the last books of the famous thinker, it stands out as the first work that should be read for two reasons.
First, Pedagogy of Freedom, which Freire wrote for the lecture he would give at Harvard University, is a book that presents the basic concepts developed by the author until that day, filtered through time. It is the most mature form of Freire's thought system, which was shaped in the half century he spent thinking, listening, writing and applying. In this sense, Pedagogy of Freedom is an Introduction to Paulo Freire's Pedagogy.

Secondly, this work offers an opportunity for Freire to re-evaluate the views he has built up to that day under the conditions of neoliberalism. As is known, the work that introduced Freire to the world was Pedagogy of the Oppressed, published in 1968, translated into more than twenty languages and considered one of the basic texts of critical pedagogy. Pedagogy of Freedom and Teachers as Cultural Workers offer completely different possibilities as texts written in the most "mature" era of neoliberalism.

Freire invites teachers to consider their profession in the light of wide-ranging issues - such as democracy, ethics, autonomy, freedom, authoritarianism. He warns teachers who do not live as they teach and most importantly, who think that there is no need to learn after becoming a teacher. He explains that the best way to combat the dehumanizing effects of neoliberalism is, again and again, an education system that values the individual and instills critical thinking, this time from a world on the threshold of a new millennium.
