Nicos Poulantzas (1936-1979) was one of the leading Marxist theorists of the late twentieth century. From the mid-1960s onwards, he developed seminal analyzes of the state and social classes and made unique contributions to the theoretical dimension of radical political analysis during the crisis years of post-war capitalism. Poulantzas, who was born and educated in Greece and then went to Paris as a law student, was closely interested in the philosophical movements of the age. Influenced first by Sartrean existentialism and then by Althusser's structuralism, Poulantzas brought great depth to the Marxist understanding of politics.
