Speech on Method - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description René Descartes (1596-1650): French mathematician, scientist and philosopher. He was one of the first to abandon Scholastic Aristotelianism. He is called the father of modern philosophy because he formulated the first modern version of the mind-body problem and initiated the development of a new science based on observation and experiment. The Discourse on Method, which was first published in 1637 without the author's name, is an autobiography in which Descartes takes stock of his past and is a work of philosophy and science that constitutes the introduction of his universal science project. He sought an unshakable foundation for science by subjecting all knowledge that seemed self-evident because they came from authorities and perceptions to methodological doubt, and he found this in the formula "I think, therefore I am", first expressed in French in the Discourse on Method. This formula, which summarizes the science system based on the knowing subject in the face of the world it envisions, is better known as "Cogito, ergo sum" in its Latin translation.
