Rhythmanalysis

In Rhythmanalysis, the last book he worked on and published only after his death, Henri Lefebvre offers his readers one of the most original fruits of the intense philosophical, sociological and theoretical discussions he has been carrying on for decades. He takes the concept of "rhythm", which has been neglected in the history of philosophy, at the center of his work and examines it in the context of space, time and daily life. This new discipline, which focuses on the analysis of cyclical and linear rhythms, hours, days, waves, musical sounds, and people's body movements, aims to deepen our knowledge of space, time and daily life, which are the important pillars identified by Lefebvre in understanding social processes. In this way, it brings rhythm to the focus of philosophical thought and social theory and contributes to the realization of its potential without distorting the original methodology of Marxism.

“Lefebvre's interest in the comparison between natural, bodily rhythms and mechanical, machine rhythms can be understood as a musical turning point in the age of orchestration that can be done with programs. (...) Lefebvre uses rhythm as a form of analysis – a tool of analysis rather than merely an object of analysis – to examine and review a number of issues. One of these is the urban problem, city life in France and other countries. As Lefebvre states, a rhythm analyst is someone who 'can listen to a house, a street, a city, as one listens to a symphony or an opera.'
