Saladin Ayyubi
Saladin as the commander who expelled the Crusaders from Jerusalem; It has become a legend that every generation retells. While Dante places him in the first circle of Hell, he is even seen as an Islamic symbol of resistance to imperialism or a hero of Arab socialism by the modern-day heirs of his military and moral achievements. But who was the real Saladin?
While answering this question, Azzam first evaluates the period in which Saladin lived. The great Sunni Renaissance of the 10th and 11th centuries succeeded in gathering Islamic thought under a single orthodox umbrella. Saladin was a child of an era similar to today's Middle East. But Azzam looks for Saladin's greatness not on the battlefields, as has always been the case, but in his spiritual and political vision. As an honest and hypocritical leader, he did not take part in the tricks of his enemies and united all Muslims in a single army.
