Black Power
What is racism? Although this word has found its way into the daily reality of millions of black people over the centuries – perhaps because this reality is taken for granted – it has rarely been defined. The word “racism”, in our view, means decisions made and policies implemented with race in mind, with the aim of subjugating and maintaining control over a racial group. This has always been the attitude of this country towards black people.
Racism is both explicit and implicit. It occurs in two closely related forms: One, the behavior of white individuals towards black individuals; two, as the attitude of the entire white community towards the black community. We call the first of these individual racism and the second institutional racism.
– Stokely Carmichael
Carmichael spends his short life in a state of uninterrupted search and effort to reinvent himself. What he did for the civil rights struggle, for the empowerment of Black people, for Pan-Africanism is unforgettable. What Black people say about their self-pride, self-love, and self-respect, and the fact that they are the embodiment of these, have affected the way Black people exist, act, and think, from body language to music, cinema, and literature. Perhaps no one has ever spoken so openly about racism and White Power.
The texts in the book, which consist of Stokely Carmichael's writings and speeches, present a path of his search and struggle.
