Diaries 1956 - 1966 Book Description
This book consists of Ekrem Alican's diaries that he kept between 1956 and 1966. Alican, who started politics in the ranks of the Democratic Party, opposed Menderes' oppressive policies, left the DP, founded the Freedom Party and later the New Turkey Party, and served as the Minister of Finance and deputy prime minister. He is one of the interesting people of the Multi-Party Turkish political life. In this diary, you will read how a principled politician, who played politics in a turbulent period full of military coups, coup attempts, electoral alliances and coalitions, fought without compromising the ideas he believed in at all costs.
My speech was listened to with great interest by the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, just like last year. At the beginning of my speech, I was reviewing my views on the budget, the exercise on balanced budget, sincerity in the budget and compliance with the rules of savings, and began to examine our economic activities. At the beginning of this discussion, I was stating that the Democratic Party government has recently made some claims that economic activities cannot develop within a democratic regime, that this idea is completely wrong, and that, in the opinion of the Freedom Party Parliamentary Group, the real economic development movement can develop within regimes of freedom and democracy. Meanwhile, he pointed out that lately we have started to hear the voices of unaccountable partisan individuals who say first economic development and then freedom: “The experiences of the world over the centuries have shown that; I was saying, "Those who serve the tyranny mentality in various lands by saying first economic development and then freedom have never been able to hide the fact that they are unhappy tools or partners of big abuse networks and big interest groups."
In this way, the government suffered a tremendous blow in the Parliament. The next day, newspapers talked about the incident at length. The sentence in dispute was published in all newspapers. In this way, the government's tactics worked against itself. Cemal Köprülü from our group and Turgut Göle from the People's Party came to me and said that my speech would be a turning point in our political life and that it was an extraordinary move. Adnan Bey and his government had received a tremendous slap in the face. We arrived at the Parliament at 10 o'clock the next morning. Budget commission spokesman Sebati Ataman had hurriedly prepared and took the podium to answer me. He supposedly responded to my words about balance in the budget, sincerity and savings.
