The work, written by the Greek philosopher Plato, is about Socrates being accused by a group of Athenians for not believing in the gods of the city and corrupting the morals of the youth, and his trial and punishment by the Athenian democracy. After the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, the laws were revised in order to rebuild the city. Socrates, whose lifestyle in such a period can be summarized as philosophizing, gained many enemies with his questions, his inquisitiveness that sometimes checked and sometimes refuted ancient wisdom, and his criticisms of the prominent figures of Athens. Although democracy replaced oligarchy, Athenian democracy was still trying to restructure; As a result of the lawsuit filed by Anytos, who played an active role in the expulsion of the Thirty Tyrants and served as a commander in the Athenian army, and the Athenian aristocrat Lykon and a young man named Meletos, on charges of corrupting the morals of the youth and impiety, he was sentenced to death in 399 BC by the decision of the Council of Five Hundred.
