Distorted Revolution
The first part of this book is a letter I wrote to the Institute for the History of the Party and Revolution on the tenth anniversary of the October revolution. The second part of the book consists of four speeches I gave before the highest organs of the party in June and October 1927, that is, during the period of the fiercest ideological struggle between the Opposition and the Stalin faction. If I have chosen the shorthand for these four speeches, among many other documents of recent years, it is because they give, in summary form, a sufficiently complete account of the views in the struggle, and because, in my opinion, their chronological continuity allows the reader to come closer to the dramatic dynamism of the struggle itself. In order to avoid repetitions, which are, after all, more or less inevitable, I have made significant cuts from the speeches in the text. I give all the necessary explanations, published for the first time in this edition, directly in the form of introductory notes to the conversations. In the USSR these remain banned writings. At the end of the book I include a small satire that I wrote while in exile in Alma-Ata in 1928, in response to a warning letter from an important adversary. This book covers a completely new past and its aim is to connect it completely to the present. Unless the process in which the problem exists is completed yet, the problem is not resolved. This book is dedicated to current history, that is, politics. The past is seen only as a direct entrance into the future.
