For Those Who Sleep Alone
At the entrance of the apartment, on the left, among the mailboxes lined up along the wall, number 39 belongs to me. I can't say that I benefited enough from it. It does not contain envelopes and folded magazines like the other boxes (especially numbers 12, 17 and 28). I sometimes wonder if mailboxes can be a measure of civilization. But I console myself by thinking about its function in reaching me for electricity, telephone and water bills. Sometimes I find occasional hand announcements: 'Coiffeur Necmi', 'We Teach English in Eight Months' or 'Can Pizza - We Provide Home Delivery'. No letter comes, because I haven't written to anyone for years. Apart from the companies I shop with on credit, no one sends holiday or New Year's cards. I neither subscribe to a magazine nor a newspaper. For this reason, I rarely use the small key I carry in my bag.
