A Brief History of Sociological Thought

This book by Alan Swingewood is one of the very few bedside works that comprehensively deals with classical, modern and contemporary social theory. In this ambitious and widely appreciated book, the author traces the trends, tensions and developments in theoretical debates throughout the history of sociological thought and develops a critical dialogue with writers of the past and today.

In this book, Swingewood first discusses the emergence of sociology as a discipline from its origins in Enlightenment rationalism and modernity. Then follows forms of symbolic interactionism, functionalism, structuration theory, and Marxism; It critically evaluates the works of classical sociologists such as Marx, Weber and Durkheim, and more recently the theories of Mead, Goffman, Parsons and Foucault. Finally, he concludes his study with a critical look at new theories of identity derived from structuralism and post-modernism.
