In fact, I was the educated and therefore somewhat refined version of my rude, lacking in refinement father, who I said would definitely be a writer if he were an educated man. I could feel that, but I was also aware that this refinement made me incredibly uneasy in the face of the harshness of life.
Sometimes I wished he were dead, and not just jokingly! I seriously wanted him to die. Then, when I saw the staring eyes of children who had lost their fathers in the war, longing for their fathers, I thought I was inferior, got angry with myself, and wanted to go and hug him as much as I could, but I still couldn't do it. Were these Middle Eastern lands, kneaded by oppressive traditions, preventing us from hugging our fathers? Or was it because of these generous but poor exploited lands that we could not hug our fathers? Or was it because our fathers, who inherited a heartless world from their fathers, did not know what fatherhood was?
