London in the 1960s. A sexual revolution is imminent. Carmel McBain is the daughter of a lower-class Irish-English family. Carmel has a dominating mother and a friend she doesn't like very much: Karina. Carmel and Karina's lives somehow intertwine. They are accepted to a prestigious Catholic school together, then together again at university in London. Carmel tries to escape the chains that her family, society and religion have bound her to.
