Stanley G. Weinbaum, one of the three great novels of science fiction, in Asimov's words, is one of the most successful writers of the early Golden Age, despite his one and a half decade writing career and tragic death. Both his first and most important story, “A Martian Odyssey,” is a true classic that radically changed science fiction and revolutionized the perception of aliens.
In the near future, humanity goes on an expedition to Mars, and an unexpected event happens to Dick Jarvis, the rebel member of the crew: He meets a brand new race on Mars; with the ostrich-like Tviil. However, Tviil is not the only life form on Mars. With his help, Jarvis will encounter other wonders of Mars in "A Martian Odyssey" and its sequel, "Valley of Dreams."
In addition to these two classic stories, “If Worlds” and “Ideal”, featuring Professor Manderpootz, another striking character created by Weinbaum, as well as “Climax of Harmony”, which tells about a scientific experiment gone wrong, and “Üsütük”, a psychedelic story focusing on alien ecologies. Moon” and “Pygmalion's Glasses”, one of the first stories to feature virtual reality, also find their place in this compilation.
A Mars Epic, the first steps of modern science fiction.
