This book tells the life story of the Azadi Organization and its leader, Miralay Xalid Bey, who formed the leading cadre of the 1925 Kurdish Uprising, one of the most important milestones of the recent Kurdish national freedom struggle. Born in Varto in 1882, Xalid Bey completed his education at the Tribal School. After completing his education at the school, Xalid Bey entered the Istanbul Military Academy and was sent to Syria and Yemen upon graduating from this school in 1902. He returned to Varto before World War I and was appointed commander of the 2nd Cibran Tribal Regiment, which was vacated by his father. He fought against the Russians who had begun their invasion from the northeast. He managed to stop the Russians on the Pasinler, Hınıs and Varto fronts. When the war ended, he settled in Varto. When the Light Cavalry Regiments were abolished in 1918, he was first appointed to the command of the Hınıs Regiment of the 3rd Army, then to the command of the Erzurum Fortified Area, and later to the 9th Corps Accounting Directorate due to his Kurdish activities, and was suspended. Although he was invited to the Erzurum Congress by the 3rd Army Inspector Mirliva Mustafa Kemal Pasha, he did not attend the congress. He continued his relations with Kurdish societies and intellectuals in Istanbul and ensured the organization of the Kurdistan Teali Society. He founded Azadi in Erzurum together with officers, notables, intellectuals and tribal leaders. After the declaration of the Republic, he managed to organize at the regional level by using the increasing reactions against the new regime among the Kurds to his advantage. In the meantime, the 1921 Koçgiri and 1924 Beytüşşebap Revolts negatively affected Azadi's strategy. He was arrested and taken from Erzurum to Bitlis after being linked to the Beytüşşebap Uprising. When it became clear that the uprising led by Şeyh Seid in Piran would end in defeat, less than three months after his arrest, he was executed in Bitlis on April 14, 1925. The day after that, Şeyh Seid was caught alive and brought to Diyarbakır, where he was tried by the Eastern Independence Court and then hanged. It is significant that Xalid Bey was executed without trial before the uprising had even ended.
This work, written by Xalid Bey's nephew M. Emin Sever from the perspective of first-hand witnesses of the period, their first-degree relatives, and his own family narratives, sheds light on the twentieth-century Kurdish national struggle, the Azadi Organization, and the 1925 Kurdish Uprising, which took shape around the life story of Xalid Bey.
