A State Operation: May 19
The journey of the ferry, which departed from Galata Pier at 16.30 on the afternoon of May 16, 1919, with 79 passengers, one woman and three children, six horses and one car, continued for three days and ended in Samsun on the morning of May 19, 1919. It is the first step towards the birth of a brand new state from the ashes of an empire that emerged from the world war in which it was destroyed, fragmented and occupied.
In this book, Murat Bardakçı reveals some of the overlooked details of Mustafa Kemal Pasha's departure to Samsun in the light of documents, some of which have not been published so far, and also explains that this journey, which constitutes the first step of the national liberation movement extending to the Republic, was transferred from the Ministry of War to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Naval Affairs. He explains that it was a state operation that the highest levels of the state, from the General Staff of the time to the Grand Vizierate and the Palace, prepared together to do something after the defeat of the World War.
