A Steppe Journey Story
In this work, which is considered the turning point of his creativity, Chekhov tells the story of a journey in the Ukrainian steppe through the eyes of a nine-year-old child. Yegorushka, who leaves his mother and sets off with his uncle for his education, finds himself in a vibrant world. On this journey, people from different layers of Russian society with all its hierarchy and customs; He mixes with merchants, clergy, peasants, workers and wagoners. The effects of the natural life in the steppe on the child's senses and emotions, the hostility towards the troublesome Dimov, whom Chekhov skillfully embodied, and his fluctuating moods are conveyed in a surprisingly realistic style. The steppe, depicted in a poetic language that brings vivid images of the Russian lifestyle and spirit to our eyes, is almost one of the main characters of the story with its colors, sounds and smells. It lives and breathes on its own, independent of the people traveling on it. Chekhov established a symbiotic relationship between nature and humans through the parallels between the steppe and human existence.
