About Literature
There is a question I often ask myself: If someone told me today that a cosmic disaster would destroy the universe tomorrow, that is, if tomorrow there would be no one left to read what I wrote today, would I still write?
At first glance, I answer no to this. Why should I write if no one can read me? At the second moment, my answer is yes, but only because of my hopeless belief that a few stars can survive the catastrophe of the galaxies and that one day tomorrow someone will be able to solve the secret of my indicators. So even on the brink of Armageddon there is still meaning in writing.
Containing Umberto Eco's essays starting from the 1980s until the early 2000s, On Literature examines the problematic of literature through the texts of many writers who shaped Western literature such as Dante, Nerval, Cervantes, Borges, Shakespeare, Joyce, Wilde: Why do we write? ? What are the functions of literature in our social and individual lives? What kind of interactions exist between literature and the development processes of historical events? What is the nature of fictional worlds? How is space represented in words? How do texts talk to each other...
About Literature is a journey of discovery in the universe of literature, guided by Eco not only as a theorist but also as a novelist who "candidly" shares his own experiences...
