About Past Times

The first book of our Selim Nüzhet Complete Works series is About Past Times. This book, which brings together Selim Nüzhet's articles written in newspapers and magazines, consists of chapters formed by 6 themes. The first is About Past Times, which also gives its name to the book. The second part is From Our Old Entertainments, the third part is Old Ramadan Nights, and the fourth part is Ramadan Musahabeleri. These sections consist of grouping the newspaper and magazine serials prepared by the author under headings, taking into account their publication dates. The fifth section brings together articles on a similar theme: Books and Reading Culture. The last part consists of articles that we cannot name with a theme and that we do not want to see disappear on the pages of the magazine.

This work was selected from Selim Nüzhet Gerçek's magazine and newspaper articles, starting from 1939 and including 1944, and was prepared by considering the integrity of the subject and theme.

These articles, written approximately 80 years ago, can be considered, from today's perspective, as an inventory of what we lost in the first place. Secondly, each article that makes up this book is an instructive, reminding archive document of the beauties we have possessed in the past, the aesthetic values that form the texture of our perception of life, and the culture of living. Thirdly, it is a work in which some of the problems we talk about today were identified and diagnosed at that time, suggestions were made for their solutions, and it was revealed that these were not taken into consideration. Fourthly, it is a work that will be a guide for us to first realize the basic motives and functioning of our past lives, the universe of meanings, their beauty and elegance in terms of culture, city-space, people, social life and entertainment, and will awaken and revitalize and even develop our aesthetic attention. Having a sincere and specific orientation towards the society and place we live in, seeing it as a whole of interconnected relationships and ties, and thinking with sensitivity as a motto can be considered the basic character of these writings.

Finally, these articles, line by line, exemplify the taste of language with great simplicity. Selim Nüzhet fulfills his responsibility to carry the time before him to his own time with his superior taste in language and sensitive eyes. So, let us take his understanding and understanding as an example and hope that we will benefit from this understanding and style of understanding while learning about the past from his pen.
