Dünyaya ve Kendimize Dair
Author: Zygmunt Bauman, Stanislaw Obirek
In these conversations about the world and themselves, Zygmunt Bauman and Stanislaw Obirek examine the questions, problems and encounters faced by the inhabitants of a fragmented, individualized society, with the wisdom and experience they gleaned from their own personal histories, and how these encounters were transformed. It also gives hints that it may be recourse. Even though they start from different places - perhaps for this very reason - it is always the same concern that draws the route of both of them and sheds light on their questions and answers: While looking for ways to establish a genuine dialogue, to be able to bring this dialogue to life right here and now , in their own conversations.
According to Bauman and Obirek, the words in circulation are turning into an empty signifier day by day, the digital age is drowning the individual in words in front of various screens and these words are piled on top of each other every day, every moment. We live in days when people create "islets of comfort" by calling us to join the chorus of voices.
In the river conversations that constitute the content of this book, Bauman and Obirek explain how we define good and evil, how we live and face the responsibility of our choices, what values we can define human dignity/respect, and which direction we need to turn our compass in matters such as friendship, memory and conscience. They question the world and themselves. During this series of questioning, rather than positioning themselves as theologians and sociologists, as would be expected from their biographical backgrounds, they focus on the questions they pose to each other and the anecdotes and arguments they quote from the teachings they present, making their readers witnesses of these conversations and inquiries.
