Absalom, Absalom
Born in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi, William Faulkner is the greatest writer of the 20th Century American Literature and He is one of the best novelists of the modern world. His novels are inspired by the legend of the south where he was born and raised. That's why he frequently discussed topics such as the civil war and the black problem. His family's approach to issues such as honor, the social position of whites, and historical heroism also provided material for Faulkner's works. "Absalom, Absalom!", one of the most important novels of the author, who is known in our country for his books such as "The Sound and the Fury", "As I Lay Dying", "Sacred Sanctuary", "That August Sun", "The Bear", was published by Yapı Kredi Publications with the translation of Aslı Biçen. . Set in Faulkner's semi-fictional hometown of Yoknapatawpha, "Absalom, Absalom!" follows the story of Thomas Sutpen and his plan to slowly perpetuate a dynasty in Mississippi in the 1830s, which was eventually ruined by his own sons. The novel, which extends from the "Bible" to the legend of the South and from there to the complexity of the modern world, creates the impression that it is based on repetition, as different narrators tell the same events over and over again; In fact, the reader is expected to understand the truth more deeply by going through incomplete explanations of the truth. "Absalom, Absalom!", which is perfect for the reader who likes difficult reading tasks with its complex language structure, is - in Murat Belge's words - a southern profile written in a high-pitched voice. The organization in Faulkner's novels resembles a symphony. Although Faulkner, a keen observer of society, seems to try to hide the structures of his works from the reader at first glance, he actually gave all the clues in his books. As in other Faulkner novels, "Absalom, Absalom" uses frequent repetition and flashbacks: the story of the Sutpen family is presented to us piecemeal, first through Quentin Compson's consciousness, as it is told to him by Miss Rosa. Then Quentin listens to other episodes of the same story from his father; Later, Quentin tries to tell Shreve; Finally, they both imagine unknown parts of the Sutpen story, and the reader immediately cooperates with them. Since Faulkner has thus indirectly expressed his doubt that the truth can be grasped one-sidedly, he does not intend to do anything other than present the types vividly with the mastery of an artist, while forcing the reader to examine the same action examples from different perspectives. A ticket to the south, destiny and Faulkner with the accompanying map of Yoknapatawpha...
