- Journalist, poet and translator. He was born in Beirut and died in Alexandria. He belongs to a family of poets. His father and aunt were poets. His family moved to Alexandria when he was 6 years old. He started his education in the schools there. He entered Al-Uhuwwa school and left there two years later and enrolled in the American school in Alexandria. When the Arab revolt broke out in 1882, he returned to Beirut with his family. And he completed his education in a British school.
In 1883, he was appointed as an Arabic and French teacher to the Baalbek school for 1 year. Afterwards, he returned to Alexandria upon the invitation of Selim Tekla, the founder of al-Ehram newspaper. He worked as editor and translator in Ehram newspaper.
In 1894, he lived in Alexandria with his brother Emin el-Haddad and his servant Bedran.
He published the newspaper Lisanü'l-Arab. This newspaper was initially published weekly, but later it began to be published daily. Then he went to Cairo. There he turned this newspaper into a social-literary weekly newspaper. He edited this newspaper until the end of his life. He published the daily Selam newspaper for a short time. He was the editor of Enisü'l-celis magazine from its publication in 1898 until his death.
His poems were published in the newspapers he worked for. His book of poetry was published in Alexandria in 1899.
He is one of the founding names of modern Arabic theatre. He translated many works from French and English classical and romantic writers and produced similar copyrighted works.
