In his narrative titled "Portrait of an Invisible Man", Paul Auster says that he knew he would write a book about his father when he received the news of his father's death by phone call early on a Sunday morning. Philip Roth, in his book Patrimony, tells almost the entire life they spent together, starting from his father's illness. I knew that I would write a book about my father, since the first day he got sick, or maybe even before, since my childhood.
My father died peacefully in his sleep, the way I wished for him in my book. First, the heartbeat slowed down, the beats became more spaced, then their intensity decreased, and after a short while, I was only watching a straight line on the screen. His hand was in mine.
I consider myself lucky for two reasons. For giving me the opportunity to say goodbye to him and for being able to fulfill the only thing he wanted from me in life...
