Against Obedience
“Two young fish are swimming along the road and by chance they come across an old fish swimming in the opposite direction. The old fish nods to them and says, 'Good morning, young people, how is the water?' he asks. The two young fish continue swimming for a while and finally one of them looks at the other and asks, 'What does water mean?' he asks.
As in this analogy in which David Foster Wallace based the truth, obedience is everywhere and in every field we live, making it difficult to perceive the truth. It's almost becoming impossible. Thus, human beings regard it as normal as air and water.
While Arno Gruen foresees the concept of obedience as the most fundamental problem of our civilization, he examines its ill effects in daily life, education, family relations and politics and makes interesting observations.
