Age of Reason
In The Age of Reason , Thomas Paine questions institutionalized religion and the legitimacy of the Bible, and discusses deism from a philosophical perspective. It points out that the Christian Church is a corrupt structure and is trying to gain political power. He argues that people should follow reason rather than revelation, that there is no such thing as a miracle, and that the Bible is an ordinary text without divine inspiration. According to Paine, there is nothing that cannot be questioned, especially religion. He is a Newtonian, meaning he believes that everything in the universe, even God, must be subject to the laws of the universe. There is no room for miracles and revelations in the universe where everything is subject to laws. God designed and created the universe with its laws, but he can no longer intervene in it either indirectly through revelation or directly through his will. According to some, with the Age of Reason, Paine added a new, aggressive and openly anti-Christian color to deism. Critics of his time found his discourse "rude" and "disrespectful". The reason why the author is the target of such criticism is that he wants to convey his message to all segments of society.
