Akıncılar Movement - Formation of Islamist Youth in the 1970s and Action Book Description “On the one hand, the Organization could act within a certain autonomous area recognized by the Party [National Salvation Party], but on the other hand, it had to be careful not to make moves that would not be tolerated by the Party. The youth movement did not have the chance to penetrate the Party and transform it from within, as did the idealist movement, because the existing political elites carefully blocked the way for such upward mobility... The Organization was neither fully an organization of the Party nor independent of it.” Akıncılar, the youth organization of the National Salvation Party, which was the party of National Vision in the 1970s, is the mirror of a critical transition period of the Islamist youth movement in Turkey. This is a transition process from "National Turkish Student Union Islamism", which is closely related to nationalism, to a more "simple" Islamism. A period of search marked by two influences, Necip Fazıl and the Iranian revolution starting from 1979, and inspired by them as well as the lively socialist movement of the period... Ertuğrul Zengin, in his analysis of the product of labor, presents us with the ideological debates of this crisis-ridden period. Meanwhile, it shows that one of the main issues of the Akıncılar is the tension between the desire to take "action" and engage in "active struggle" and the concern to stay away from the armed violence that escalated in the second half of the 1970s. The Akıncılar Movement also paints a very detailed picture about the socio-cultural profile of the Akıncı youth. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
