An Astronaut's Endless Journey
Arthur C. Clarke Award Nominee One of Kirkus "Top 10 Debut Novels of the Year"
“A strangely compelling and incredibly compelling novel that reads like a cross between Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 and a Milan Kundera novel, set in a universe similar to Philip K. Dick's and with nods to Kafka's The Metamorphosis.” .”
- Library Journal (Starred Review) -
“Mix Bradbury, Lem and Saint-Exupery, and add a pinch of Kafka... Here is an enjoyable first novel with a lot to say from Czech immigrant Kalfar.” –Kirkus
“Kalfar's entertaining first novel manages to stand out with its reality and realism rather than metaphor.”
- Hari Kunzru -
Orphaned as a child and raised by his grandparents in the Czech countryside, Jakub Procházka, a modest scientist, is offered to become the Czech Republic's first astronaut. The cloud called Chopra, which appeared between Venus and Earth, turned the sky purple. This dangerous solo flight offers Jakub an opportunity to realize his heroic dream and to confront the sins of his father, an informant of the previous regime. Setting out towards the unknown, Jakub even risks leaving Lenka, the love of his life, behind.
While alone in Deep Space, Jakub encounters a gigantic alien spider that he suspects may be a fantasy. Over time, the duo became close friends and spent their time talking about the nature of love, life and death, and the deliciousness of Nutella. Will all this be enough for Jakub to complete his mission and return to Earth safely and have a second chance with Lenka?
Full of surprises, The Endless Journey of an Astronaut is an intergalactic journey of love, determination and discovery.
