An Execution Book Explanation Most people are not overly selfish. After about thirty years of age, they give up their individual ambitions - in many cases, they almost forget that they are individuals - and begin to live primarily for others, crushed under the burden of life. But there is also a talented, stubborn minority who are determined to live their own life to the fullest; Writers also belong to this group. George Orwell was one of the prose masters of his time, as well as the novelist aspect he revealed in his novels 1984 and Animal Farm. An Execution brings together four essays, one of which is book-length, that showcase this aspect of the author. In "My Reason for Writing", Orwell explains how he started his writing adventure, and in "The Boundaries of Art and Propaganda" he shares his thoughts on the position of art and literature in the age of war. In "The Lion and the Unicorn", written at a time when the Nazi invasion of England was a possibility at any time and bombs were falling on London, Orwell tries to reconcile the necessity of socialist revolution with his patriotic feelings and the identity of his country. "An Execution", which gives its name to the book, is a short article describing the events surrounding an execution he witnessed while serving in Burma.
