The term antisemitism, which has been defined primarily within the framework of its relationship with racist thoughts and actions, is, as such, the source of many misunderstandings and does not fully explain all that hatred of Jews. The evolution of the concept and the guises it has assumed are so diverse that they all refer to a different interpretative regime: Judaism and the religious reaction to it, radical anti-Zionism, anti-Semitism of Christian origin, and so on. The Enlightenment's religious-free sympathy for the Jews, the ambivalent positions taken by anti-capitalist and revolutionary formations regarding the Jewish issue, and finally, the anti-Semitism fed entirely by racist and nationalist tendencies.
