Arab Nationalism

According to Davisa, Arab nationalism, inspired by nineteenth-century German Romantic nationalists, took root after World War I and took the Arab world by storm only in the 1950s and 60s under the charismatic leadership of Egyptian Gamal Abdel Nasir. In the vacuum created in the region with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalism, which took off in the late 1950s with the unification of Egypt and Syria and the nationalist revolution in Iraq, was crushed under the heavy blow it received from Israel in 1967.
The collapse of Arab nationalism, the ideal of a state that gathers all Arabs under the same umbrella, is the most important development that paved the way for radical Islam in the region.
Adid Davisa, who was born and raised in Iraq during the years when Arab nationalism was on the rise, describes this interesting period in every aspect, using rich Arabic sources as well as Western ones.
