
Armenian Literature Samples 1913
Samples of Armenian Literature contains fourteen stories from eight famous Armenian writers. Sarkis Srents, who translated the stories from Armenian into Ottoman and published them in Servet-i Fünun magazine, compiled Numuneler into a book in 1913, adding the comments he received from four famous Ottoman intellectuals.
The stories in the book present interesting views of Ottoman Istanbul in the early 1900s. Boats rented to cross from Kadıköy to the other side, horse-drawn trams operating in Galata, masked balls held in the halls in Beyoğlu, the ordeal of rural porters, the disappointment of young girls migrating from Bursa to Istanbul in the hope of finding husbands, the painful love stories of young people... .
