Awakening-Modern Classics
This novel by Kate Chopin, known for her works depicting New Orleans culture and advocating local colors in literature, shocked the American public when it was published in 1899. Awakening, which tells the story of a woman waking up and declaring her individuality by standing on her own feet, is likened to Madame Bovary in some respects. Although Chopin's objective approach to the independent female character who pursues her own desires attracted criticism at the time, the novel's stylistic beauty and sensitivity were praised.
The importance Chopin gave to the liberation of women and his pioneering of later feminist writers, led to the 20th century. In the late 1960s, his works, especially Awakening, which had long been forgotten, came to the fore again. Some critics who revisited the novel emphasized its "brave" realism. Per Seyersted's biography of Kate Chopin, published in 1969, was the product of a comprehensive analysis of the author's life and works. The discovery of his stories, letters and diaries, which had not been brought to light before, revealed a portrait of a writer who was different from what was known until then, and who was much more determined and concerned. Thus, Kate Chopin took her deserved place among the important writers of 19th century American literature.
