Awakening of the Land
It is undoubtedly José Saramago's most personal, most intimate work with traces of his childhood experiences. It tells about the people of a cruel geography where the memories that form the bed of the dream world are rooted. Throughout the three-generation story of the Mau-Tempo family, who lived in the Alentejo province in the south of Portugal at the beginning of the twentieth century, we witness the spirit of rebellion and resistance that the poor and landless peasants, struggling to survive, never lost despite the exploitation they were subjected to and all the cruelty and torture they suffered.
In Saramago's words, “natural dignity in the face of life” turns into a virtue in itself in the harsh conditions on the endless plains of the Alentejo.
