Bakü Komünü 1917-1918
New studies on the October Revolution, which has completed its 100th anniversary, have significantly broken the traditional perception that the Revolution started from a center and spread to the surrounding areas. Ronald Grigor Suny's 1972 book The Baku Commune is considered a pioneering work in this respect. In the Baku Commune, Suny not only contributed to the integrity of the Soviet Revolution from a peripheral perspective, but also brought the Baku Commune, a very original experience in the history of the revolution, from shadow to light. Labor history generally concerns large centres. Suny shows how Baku became an important center for the labor movement, with all its contradictions and the unique characteristics of the labor movement. The achievements and problems faced by the Commune, which was declared under the leadership of the Bolshevik leader Isdepan Shahumyan and inspired by the Paris Commune in Baku, a cosmopolitan oil and worker city where workers from different ethnic groups such as Russians, Muslims and Armenians live together, can be learned from the perspective of social movements. It forms the basis for many stories. Suny depicts this democratic and peaceful transition, which is rare in political history, in the finest detail. The Baku Commune is also read with interest because it draws attention to the historical background of the tensions between the two feuding peoples of the Caucasus - Armenians and Azerbaijanis.
