Baragan's Thorns, one of Panait Istrati's mature works, written in French in 1928, is the narrative of a social contradiction experienced not only by Romania but also by the whole Balkans and even Turkey at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is the contrast between the flourishing modern economy and institutions on the one hand, and the misery that falls on the bulk of the population, the rural poor. Harsh living conditions, medieval relics of landlordism intertwined with the modern state, and of course rebellion, accompany the struggle of a poor young man with geography who wants to break out of his cocoon. Istrati dedicated this novella, in which he included sections from his own life story, to the villagers of Stănilenen, Băilenenti and Hodivoaia, who were criticized for revolting against the government and landlordism in 1907.
