Village
The Village, which is the first part of William Faulkner's trilogy about the Snopes family, is the story of penniless Flem Snopes. It is the story of Turkey's rise and enrichment. One day, Flem, whose past is unknown, shows up in the village of Frenchman's Bend and gets a job on Will Varner's farm. As the ambitious and cunning Flem increases his power, first on the farm and within the Varner family, and then in the region, a bitterly ironic portrait of the American South begins to emerge.
The Village is a novel of human instincts, weaknesses, passion, loss and change. No matter how complex the language, how crowded the characters and how local the plot, it is a sharp, universal and contemporary novel.
One of Faulkner's richest novels. -Cleanth Brooks
Literally perfect: clever but also direct, funny and simple; It masterfully reflects the decay in the South after the Civil War. -New York Times
