"Why did you lead the slaves to revolt?" Singbe stared at Judson, just staring. At that moment, these few words exploded like a cannon in the room: "Not a slave! Singbe is not a slave. Africa!"
Everyone was frozen in place. Singbe was holding his hand to his chest, amidst the clacking of the chains, and kept repeating the same words. "Not a slave! Africa!" Judson approached Singbe.
"Can you speak English? Huh? Come on, say something more, don't stop! Come on!"
"Not a slave! Not a slave!"
Singbe took a step towards the judge. One of the sailors raised his rifle and stopped him. Singbe began speaking loudly in Mende. "I am a free Mende. I will not be a slave again. You can tie me with chains. You can whip my back and my feet until I skin it, and drain all the blood from my body. But if you cannot make me a slave. I will not be anyone's slave! That's why you have to kill me."
