Bread Workers
Bakeries and bread workers have a special place in Gorky's life. Bakeries. It was one of his Universities. In Russia at that time, bakeries were centers of political education filled with forbidden books. Young Gorky worked as a bread worker and participated in secret revolutionary activities for many years in Kazan, one of the intense centers of the revolutionary movement. Gorky says this about his political education, which was haphazard and generally dependent on coincidences:
"You call me a Marxist; of course I am. But not according to Marx, because my dough is kneaded like this... I learned Marxism better and better than books from Semenov, a former bread worker in Kazan."
