Forced to leave the Pantry, where he worked almost to death, due to a serious illness, young Thomas finds himself on a death row in the hospital where his grandfather, to whom he owes all his intellectual development, is admitted. Desperately waiting for the death of both himself and the only person in his family with whom he could communicate, among those who were living their last days of life and hopeless cases, caused irreparable wounds in him. Dealing with psychological collapse and physical pain will after a while bring brand new changes in their ideas about their existence and future.

While Bernhard sincerely shares the traumas and fears created by his heavy experience, he pushes the reader to question the developmental stages of this great writer.
