Brief History of Germany

Geography is destiny. The most influential geographical elements in shaping Germany's destiny were the Rhine and Elbe rivers. While Roman general Drusus was conquering Germany, he crossed the Rhine with his legions and advanced eastward, reaching the Elbe bank. According to legend, at this point, a giant female figure appears on the opposite bank of the Elbe and tells Drusus that his days are numbered, to return home and put an end to his greed for conquest. The Roman General listened to the voice of common sense and did not cross the Elbe, thus preventing the Romans from setting foot in the swamp east of the Elbe. However, approximately fifteen hundred years later, the Prussian state, which was born in this swampy ground, would not act with as much common sense as the Romans. Prussian militarism would enable the unification of the German states, but it would play a major role in the outbreak of the First World War, then in the scourge of Nazism in Germany and Europe, and eventually in the outbreak of the Second World War...
