Angudi Siraharner (Bad Lovers) is a sharp novel of social criticism that takes an x-ray of 1950s Turkey by focusing on the relationship of teenage Sur with his family and girlfriend Norma. While revealing the contradictions, conflicts and inequalities that caused Sur, a senior high school student, to be filled with a sense of rebellion against first his parents, then the Istanbul Armenian society and finally everything around him, Zaven draws attention to the tensions that hang in the air and are almost about to explode. Biberyan seems to be on the nerve endings of Turkish society after September 6-7 and before the military coup of May 27. Sur, who had struggled for years to finally gain a position within the Armenian community, felt a deep disgust for his father from the countryside and his mother from Istanbul, their world of values, conservatism and bourgeois lifestyle, and faced pressure from his family because his girlfriend was older than him and was a working woman. He is roasted in an increasingly intense spiral of anger within the wall he has built around himself with his youthful crises of confidence and masculinity. Angudi Siraharner, with a now-historic Istanbul hanging in the background, focuses on the ever-aching traces of traumas handed down from the past to the future, around the story of a family, as he walks the streets of Adalar, Eminönü, and Şişli. Zaven Biberyan, who is now considered one of the most important Armenian writers of the 20th century and has a loyal readership with his works translated into Turkish, offers the reader one of the best examples of the social realist novel.
